Wolverines Extend Streak to 5, Win HOF Tip-Off Tournament

November is a time for Christmas anticipation, football, and snow removal, yet some of the most telling college basketball is being played with little to no attention. The early season tournaments are often a measuring stick to see different lineup combos, to see which freshmen to take seriously, and to get an early feel for who is really a contender. Just two weeks into the season and Michigan is doing just that, showing off their depth, strength and ability to shut down opponents on their way to a huge road win at Villanova, and a tournament title at the HOF Tip-Off in Connecticut.

It began this week with a National Title rematch against the Villanova Wildcats, a chance at revenge for many returning Michigan players. Tons of trash was talked before the game, but the Wolverines dismantled the 'Cats on the floor, wiping them out 73-46 and leaving no doubts about the Michigan offence following a pair of sluggish openers. Next came back to back wins against George Washington and Providence, both in very convincing fashion to win a trophy and get to 5-0 on the year.

The wins are impressive, but it is November, so the performances are what's to be marveled at. The performances show that the Wolverines spread the wealth, scoring with everyone, from everywhere. Take Wednesday for example, where Michigan scored 44 in the paint, 26 off turnovers, 12 second chance and 20 off the bench. The kind of versatility that keeps coaches up at night, the ability to go small in an instant, and the ability to get out in transition, all elements that will make Michigan frightening. John Beilein's tenure has been one that often sees his teams start slow and strike late in the season, which makes this start one that certainly raises the ceiling for them going forwards.

Next for Michigan is Chattanooga, followed by North Carolina in the B1G/ACC Challenge, and then conference games against Purdue and Northwestern. These next four will be a great measuring stick to prove Michigan is for real, and the way the Wolverines are playing right now they probably expect to win all four. The UNC game is massive, but with the B1G schedule expanding into December, getting off on the right foot in conference play is just as critical. Look for the Wolverines to keep mixing up the lineup and showing teams different looks. If you pay attention close enough you'll see great basketball for the next few months, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.
